Bite Into Bliss: Why Delta 9 THC Edibles From Hemp Plants Are The New Wave in Cannabis Enjoyment

When we talk about THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), it’s almost automatic to link it to marijuana, the plant famously known for its psychoactive properties. But what some people don’t know is that Delta 9 THC – the very compound that gives marijuana its fame – is also present in hemp, a closely related but legally distinct plant.

D9 THC found in hemp is chemically identical to that in marijuana. What sets them apart is their origin. Hemp refers to the plant Cannabis sativa, which is the same species as marijuana but has a considerably lower THC content (less than 0.3%), making it far less potent. This is what places hemp in a completely different legal category in many places.

Unlike their marijuana-derived counterparts, hemp-based products are federally legal (and legal in many US states as well), which means you can buy and consume them in areas where traditional THC products are restricted or illegal.

Why the Buzz About Hemp-Derived THC Edibles?

The 2018 Farm Bill changed the game by legalizing hemp and products made from it. Before 2018, hemp was lumped together with marijuana under the federal Controlled Substances Act, so it was treated like a dangerous drug, even though it’s poles apart from marijuana in many ways. The biggest difference? Hemp has very low levels of THC (less than 0.3%), which means it doesn’t have the same ability to make you high.

The 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp from the Controlled Substances Act and legalized it at the federal level. As a result, companies can now create and sell products made from hemp without worrying about getting into the legal hot waters.

And we are not just talking about the typical pot brownies here. Since hemp became legal, there has been a surge in all kinds of THC gummies, snacks, and treats. This includes gummies, chocolates, and things like hemp-infused honey and cooking oil! You can even find THC-based creams for your skin, capsules you can take like a vitamin, and pet products made with hemp for your fur babies.

Do note that although hemp has the green light from the federal government, states still have the power to set their own rules. Some states have fully embraced hemp, while others have put more restrictions in place.

For example, as of 2023, hemp-derived products (including THC) are legal for both recreational and medicinal use in Alaska, California, Colorado, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington. About this, in Idaho, Nebraska, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Wyoming, there is a complete ban on all products made from cannabis plants.

Some states like Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and Utah have mixed laws, where medical marijuana and hemp-derived cannabinoids might be legal, but recreational use is either restricted or not allowed.

Hemp and Health

When people go through an intensive treatment like chemotherapy for cancer, a common side effect is nausea and vomiting. Researchers have been looking into how to help with this. They found that Delta 9 THC can be quite effective in reducing these side effects. In several trials, THC was compared to traditional anti-nausea medications (antiemetics), and it has consistently shown to be much more effective.

If you have a health condition that makes you nauseous, THC cannabis edibles like gummies or vapes have a strong chance of helping you alleviate these debilitating effects.

Delta 9 THC has also been studied for its analgesic properties, i.e., its ability to diminish or eliminate pain. Now, chronic pain, as opposed to acute pain, is long-standing pain that persists beyond the usual recovery period or occurs along with a chronic health condition, like arthritis.

THC interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which plays a role in regulating pain sensation. THC binds to receptors in the ECS, specifically CB1 receptors in the brain and nervous system, altering pain perception. So, when compared to conventional pain medications like codeine, THC has been shown to produce substantial pain relief. This is major because codeine is a well-known opioid pain reliever, but it comes with risks such as addiction and other side effects.
